Reflection – Topic 1

Alright, I’ll admit it. I’ve never heard of the term ‘Digital Visitor’ and ‘Digital Resident’, much less know which group I belong to. However, after intensive research and reading of my friend’s blogs, I am now so much clearer about those terms.

Reading Joey’s blog has made me realise that maybe not everyone is strictly either a ‘Visitor’ or ‘Resident’, there may be people who consider themselves to be both. This is a very valid point as in the future, the barriers of technology would be lowered and the disparity between ‘Visitor’ and ‘Resident’ would definitely be reduced.

In YangTing’s blog, she provided many good examples such as XiaXue which allowed me to understand who ‘Digital Residents’ really were. By citing such examples, she also was able to sure the distinct difference between both terms which helped me understand them better.

Initially, I assumed that I was naturally a ‘Digital Resident’ given the amount of time I spend on the internet. However, I have soon come to realise, that doesn’t necessarily make me a ‘Digital Resident’. Instead, being a person who only uses social media to connect with my current friends and much prefer not to post my opinion on public forums, I would now consider myself to be a ‘Digital Visitor’. Someone who only uses the web/technology when necessary.

In conclusion, in today’s world. It might seem that more and more of us are becoming ‘Digital Residents’. With the advancement of technology and the availability of the web. It is only inevitable. However, I hope that everyone continues to maintain the status quo and not let technology ‘take over’. Simple gestures such as talking physically should never be taken over by text messages.
